AUTOMATED LICENSE PLATE READERS (ALPR)
March 2001
Before encouraging investment in any technology application for law enforcement, LETC will always ask the agency what their goal and expectations are for the technology. We have seen many many systems that have failed to meet agency expectations, largely because those expectations were never defined by the vendor who sold the technology in the first place. LPR Systems are n exception. Proper system design is critical to meet your departments expectations.
HOW ALPR WORKS
Data Capture
Fixed and mobile license plate recognition (LPR) cameras take photos of license plates, capturing date, time and GPS coordinates of where the photo was taken- just like any smartphone camera.
LPR Data Storage
Each plate image captured, along with the data for that image (date, time, location), is stored in a cloud based or on premises database as an LPR record that can be searched only by authorized personnel.
Data Ownership
Your agency may own the LPR data it generates and you can decide whether you want to share that data with other agencies. And the more data available, the greater chance you have to develop a lead.
Commercial Data
Even without LPR cameras, you can benefit by subscribing to LPR services. Many of the leading LPR solutions offer commercial data which is derived from LPR reads of repossession companies and other commercial entities. These reads can quickly become investigative leads, identifying stolen or felony vehicles, and other vehicles on agency specific investigative hot lists.
Law Enforcement Agency Sharing
We believe the power of LPR is in the data and analytics. Data sharing among local, state, and federal partners significantly increases the volume of reads available and improves the quality of investigative leads.
DESIGN A NETWORK THAT WORKS
Before encouraging investment in any technology application for law enforcement, LETC will always ask the agency what their goal and expectations are for the technology. We have seen many many systems that have failed to meet agency expectations, largely because those expectations were never defined by the vendor who sold the technology in the first place.
LETC is not a product vendor. We do not sell LPR systems. We help you design the most effective system for your agency, regardless of which LPR solution or combination of solutions you choose to deploy.
LETC consultants are experts with LPR systems from all of the leading solution providers, including;
Vigilant Solutions
Leonardo ELSAG ALPR
Flock Public Safety
Reconyx
OpenALPR
PlateSmart
VMS based systems such as Genetec, Milestone, and Avigilon.
What LETC consultants have discovered while designing world class detection networks is that one solution is not always the best solution. Sometimes a combination of systems is the best solution for your agency and your budget.
LETC will help define realistic ALPR expectations, and design a system that meets your agency’s needs and budget.
